Hurricane Helene Resources

Posted By: Leah Donelan McDermott Trending Topics,

Just after 11PM on Thursday, September 26, Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph in Taylor County, Florida, about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry. This is the third hurricane to hit this region of the state in the last 13 months.

Taylor, Dixie, Suwannee, and Madison counties were knocked completely off the power grid, and other nearby counties had as many as 90% of residents without power. Storm surges on the Gulf Coast from the Keys to the Big Bend have caused severe flooding and property damage. At least seven lives have been lost. Damages are still being assessed, but it’s clear that Florida’s recovery from Hurricane Helene will be long.

After hitting Florida, Hurricane Helene did significant damage in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia as well.

We know storm preparation is incredibly stressful, and we know significant damage has been done in many areas of the state. Thank you to all of you who are on the ground, cleaning up, providing services, and sharing information. We are thinking of all of you who have suffered losses.

If your community has been affected by Hurricane Helene, or if your nonprofit organization is providing disaster relief and response services, please let FNA know
