The Economic Impact of Florida's Nonprofits
Overview
Florida's nonprofit organizations create jobs, generate revenue, pay wages, and produce economic activity that extends far beyond their own operations. Through their direct, indirect, and induced economic effects, nonprofit spending and employment support businesses, workers, and communities throughout Florida.
Released in May, Florida Nonprofit Alliance's 2026 Economic Impact of Florida's Nonprofits Report found that Florida's 23,224 qualifying 501(c)(3) nonprofits hold $312.4 billion in assets, generate $140.4 billion in annual revenue, directly employ 517,585 people, pay $34.7 billion in annual wages and contribute $329.4 billion in total economic output statewide.

Beyond the Numbers
Economic impact data tells only part of the story: Communities rely on nonprofits every day for vital services, including shelter, food, clothing, workforce development, childcare, and legal aid. These services are especially crucial in Florida, with 47 percent of Florida households living below the ALICE threshold (asset limited, income constrained, employed).

At the same time, the state’s nonprofit density remains low compared to this statewide need, ranking 43rd nationally with only 2.6 nonprofits per 1,000 households. This persistent gap between high community vulnerability and relatively limited nonprofit capacity highlights a critical need for the sector to expand its capacity to address service gaps, especially in under-resourced counties.
